SEATED WIDE ANGLE FORWARD BEND

SEATED WIDE ANGLE FORWARD BEND

“Seated wide angle forward bend” is a rather prosaic translation which does not quite capture the beauty of upavishtha konasana. This pose allows you to explore quiet moments on the mat chipping away the ego (and at a physical level your inflexibility)
Be careful when doing this one if you have pain in the lower back – place a rolled up blanket under your seat for more ease.
Initially you may find it easier to bend the knees slightly or slide rolled up hand towels beneath the knees for added support.
Advance gradually with regular practice, until your chest and upper body are entirely on the floor and your hands comfortably hold the toes. See a previous post on this FB page for that variation. Release the pose and rest in dandasana.
Have fun playing the edge : not going too far but pushing the envelope to go beyond your comfort zone. Just a little each time.
